Frequently Asked Questions
Taking the first step in seeking end-of-life care can be overwhelming. Take heart, because Mo Cara Hospice is here to help. We’d be honored to sit down with your family and share what we’ve learned about this very personal experience.
Many of our conversations start with these questions in common:
What is hospice care?
Simply put, hospice care is given to patients who are no longer looking to cure their ailments. Instead, the focus is on relieving pain and making the patient comfortable as their lives come to its natural conclusion. Based in the Rockford region, Mo Cara offers medical expertise, experience and understanding to serve patients of all ages who are in need of hospice care. To qualify for hospice care under Medicare, a physician must certify that life expectancy is six months or less. But hospice care may continue for months, even years, with recertification by a physician or nurse practitioner.
How is hospice care different than palliative care?
Palliative care can be provided at any stage of a serious illness as it aims to manage symptoms, alleviate pain, and improve overall wellbeing with an eye to curative treatments.
How do I know if my loved one is ready for hospice care?
Please know that this has been a difficult decision for every family we have helped at Mo Cara in Rockford, Ill. You are not alone as you make this decision. Starting with your loved ones’ doctors, the team at Mo Cara will help you walk through the tough conversations that need to happen to make the hospice decision. What part does my loved one’s doctor play in hospice?
Quite often, the hospice discussion is started by your loved one’s doctor. After they refer you to Mo Cara, they can stay involved in your loved one’s care, or our medical team will handle everything. This comes down to the patient’s choice, and we have experience working with medical teams to take care of your loved one.
How will I pay for hospice care?
Medicare Part A covers hospice services, and Mo Cara is a Medicare-accredited provider. Alternatively, your loved one may have coverage through employer health insurance, military family plans or long-term care insurance. As experienced hospice providers, Mo Cara can work with your loved one’s insurance to make hospice work for them and minimize costs for your family.
