Frequently Asked Questions

Taking the first step in seeking end-of-life care can be overwhelming. Take heart, because Mo Cara Hospice is here to help. We’d be honored to sit down with your family and share what we’ve learned about this very personal experience.

Many of our conversations start with these questions in common:

Who qualifies for hospice care?

Mo Cara offers medical care expertise and understanding to serve patients of all ages and all stages of life.  To qualify for hospice care, a physician must certify that life expectancy is six months or less.  But hospice may continue for months, even years, with recertification by a physician or nurse practitioner.

Can we afford hospice?

Medicare Part A covers hospice services, and Mo Cara is a Medicare-accredited provider. Alternatively, your loved one may have coverage through employer health insurance, military family plans or long-term care insurance. In any situation, we’ll work together to explore resources.

How do we start this tough conversation?

Your loved one may have already made peace with the idea of hospice care and the comforts it provides. Other times it’s difficult, especially when dementia is present. Lean on the guidance of our experienced social workers and chaplains, who would be a part of your Mo Cara care team.

How do we select a hospice provider?

Most hospice journeys start by researching care providers online—just as you are now. It’s also helpful to seek referrals from trusted healthcare professionals and friends who have been through the end of life experience. The final step is to interview the hospice providers that stand out, asking any questions in your mind to feel connected and confident in your decision.

Is Palliative Care different than hospice?

Palliative Care can be provided at any stage of a serious illness and alongside curative treatments. It aims to manage symptoms, alleviate pain, and improve overall wellbeing, regardless of prognosis with ongoing coordination of care for chronic disease management.
